NOTE: Upgrading/reformatting flashcards on these units destroys ALL data on the flashcard. This kit contains the REQUIRED files needed to upgrade a flashcard on any of the hardware platforms listed below. The following files are included in EVERY self-extracting file; This instructional readme file: flshupg.txt Memory Card Loader File, mcffs1.sys which is REQUIRED on ALL Xyplex flashcards. ONE of the following images will be included depending on platform you are upgrading; Enhanced load image for min 3 meg xpcs00s.sys (V6.0.2S30) MX-1600, MX-1608 Enhanced load image for 2 meg xpcs00s.sys (V6.0S91) MX-1520, MX-1600, MX-1608, MX-1820 Load image for the 1 meg mx1500.sys (V6.0 S92) MX-1500, MX-1600, MX-1608, MX-1800 Load image for the 1 meg MX-1400, MX1450 mx1400a.sys (V6.0S91) Load image for min 2 meg MX-1400, MX1450 mx1400a.sys (V6.0.2S1) UPGRADING THE ACCESS SERVER FLASHCARD SOFTWARE The following instructions outline the procedure (in exact order) to update a flashcard for various Xyplex access servers. We have included two host upgrade examples as outlined in Step 3: - Upgrading a flashcard from a TCP/IP host via the TFTP protocol - Step 3A - Upgrading a flashcard from a VAX/VMS host via the MOP protocol - Step 3B STEP 1- Determine installed memory on Access Server: You must know the amount of memory installed in your access server before starting, as this determines which version of software you'll use to upgrade your unit. V6.0.2 and higher require 4 meg of installed RAM on the unit. To obtain this information, issue the following command: Xyplex>> show server alternate status Installed Memory: 4194304 bytes STEP 2 - Software Retrieval: WEB Site Instructions: http://www.NBase-Xyplex.com - From the home page, click on the Services & Support tab. - The next page is labeled "Advantedge Support". Click on "Members Entrance". Enter your site specific Username & Password in CAPITAL letters. Once you are on the Advantedge Support page, please select the link titled "Access Server and Gateway Software". Select the appropriate image to download. FTP Site Instructions: (this is a hidden site, so you must know the exact filename(s) to copy. The file(s) must be copied in binary mode.) Site: ftp.xyplex.com or 140.179.254.101 Username: anonymous Password: your_email_address Location: /pub/outgoing Image filename(s): **Please call Xyplex Networks Customer Support for this information** Xyplex access servers and images: mx1400a.sys - MX-1450 mx1500.sys - MX-1500, MX-1600, MX-1608, MX-1800 (1meg) xpcs00s.sys - MX-1520, MX-1600, MX-1608, MX-1820 (2meg or greater) mcffs1.sys - Flash Card Loader image (must reside in AREA 1 on all flash cards) STEP 3A - TCP/IP Host Setup Instructions: **Please follow these instructions if you will be upgrading your flashcard from files residing on a UNIX host or a PC using the TFTP protocol. 1. Copy the image files from our WEB site to your host in binary mode. Move these files into the TFTP home directory on your host. Next, change the file permissions to 777, and owner to nobody. 2. Verify that the TFTP daemon is running on your host. On a UNIX host issue a "grep" command similar to this; goofy-root> ps -aux |grep tftp nobody 24001 0.0 0.3 28 72 ? S 11:41 0:00 in.tftpd /tftpboot root 24012 0.0 0.9 32 196 p0 S 11:42 0:00 grep tftp Please note that in the above display, the daemon process also points to the TFTP home directory /tftpboot. If it doesn't, please check the /etc/inetd.conf file for this information. Some UNIX operating systems do not specify a home directory for TFTP. Please check you host's MAN pages for further information regarding TFTP daemon setup. 3. Test the TFTP functionality on the UNIX host. In this example, my UNIX host's ip address is 134.145.23.35. Issue the following commands from another host on your network: tftp 134.145.23.35 tftp> get xpcs00s.sys If this is successful, proceed to Step 4 - Access Server Instructions. If it fails, correct the TFTP issue on your UNIX host. PC Instructions- ex: using CHAMELEON TCP/IP FOR WINDOWS NETMANAGE: 1. This will only work if your PC has an installed TCP/IP stack. From the START button, go into Programs and click on Chameleon File & Print. From this menu click on TFTP. 2. Make note of the directory it is pointing to. The default tftp directory would be "C:\NETMANAG.95". 3. Within the TFTP server window, click on Settings. On this menu, click on Server. Click the Server On box to turn the process on (denoted by a check mark in the box). 4. Move the image files for the access server to the above specified directory. Proceed to Step 4 - Access Server Instructions section to continue. STEP 3B - VAX/VMS Host Instructions: Please follow these instructions only if you are upgrading your flashcard from files residing on a VAX/VMS host using the MOP protocol: 1. Copy the image files from our WEB or FTP site to your VAX host in binary mode. Move these files into the MOM$LOAD directory. 2. Obtain the ethernet address of your VAX host by issuing the following command: (this address will be needed in step 3B below) $ mcr ncp NCP>show executive status Node Volatile Status as of 25-AUG-1997 15:46:10 Executor node = 1.230 (SSEALP) State = on Physical address = AA-00-04-00-E6-04 3. Verify that the DECnet circuit is up and running on the VAX: NCP>show active circuit Active Circuit Volatile Summary as of 8-JUL-1998 15:32:02 Circuit State Loopback Adjacent Name Routing Node SVA-0 on 1.500 NCP>show circuit sva-0 char Circuit Volatile Characteristics as of 8-JUL-1998 15:32:57 Circuit = SVA-0 State = on Service = enabled STEP 4 - ACCESS SERVER INSTRUCTIONS: Procedure for Hardware Types: 1450, 1600 and 1608 : Please follow the previous instructions for obtaining the image files from the WEB site and placing them on your host. Both the image file and the mcffs1.sys file are required in order to successfully upgrade a flashcard on one of the above units. Due to the firmware design of these units, the format command creates the /SYSTEM directory only. Therefore, parameter files cannot be stored locally on flashcards formatted on these units. Each and every time a flashcard upgrade is performed on one of these units, a FORMAT must first be done.
